UNDERHILL ROSE LAUNCHES 2012 TOUR AND BRINGS HEARTFELT COUNTRY SOUL TO EASTERN TENNESSEE - December 15, 2011

ASHEVILLE, NC- December 15, 2011 -A pristine blend of Americana, bluegrass, R&B, and roots music will be heard across eastern Tennessee when Underhill Rose, an all-female trio from North Carolina, launches its 2012 tour in The Volunteer State. The band is set to play the first of a two show weekend at Knoxville’s Preservation Pub 2nd Floor Speakeasy on Thursday, January 12th at 8:00pm, followed by a trek northwest on Friday, January 13th at 9:00pm for a performance at Machiavelli’s in Bristol.

Led by Eleanor Underhill, a sultry voiced banjo picker and Molly Rose, a powerful songstress with a dazzling stage presence, the trio captures a unique fusion of styles and harmonies with a true mountain sentiment. The announcement of the first 2012 dates is an important step for Underhill Rose, according to Molly. “What a great way to begin the New Year! Starting in Tennessee, with an opportunity to extend our following in the region is a dream being realized,” she said. “I cannot wait to share our music and stories with everyone.”

Coming off of a fruitful year in 2011, Eleanor says the group is ready to capitalize on its success. “Underhill Rose made a lot of great strides this year,” she said. “We released our first album, played a number of high profile shows, and solidified our organization with new management, booking agents, and a publicist. We’re ready to take this foundation and ‘make some noise’ next year.” The addition of Salley Williamson, an upright bass player, has transformed the female duo to a trio. “We’re very lucky to have Salley,” said Molly. “She has brought something special to the band and I look forward to hitting the road with her next year.”

In addition to the shows in Tennessee, the Underhill Rose has announced concert dates in Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina; Roanoke, Virginia; Thomas, West Virginia; and a coveted showcase appearance at the Carolina ShowFest in Charlotte, North Carolina. The group also plans to release its first music video of the fan favorite, “Who Brought the Sun,” in the beginning of 2012.

Thank you Citizen Times! - November 1, 2011

http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20111021/ENT02/310210017/Asheville-s-Underhill-Rose-brings-country-soul-Grove-Park
ASHEVILLE — The voices in Underhill Rose may sound familiar. The harmony-driven folk duo, featuring Eleanor Underhill and Molly Rose Reed, was one half of the popular Asheville-based band, the Barrel House Mamas.

After the group disbanded, Underhill and Reed decided they wanted to keep singing together, so in 2009 they formed Underhill Rose, which features a like-minded brand of dusty country soul with gorgeous vocal arrangements that range from sweet and delicate to high and soaring.

“After a lot of time and healing from the Barrel House Mamas breaking up, we decided that we wanted to play music together again,” Underhill says. “At the beginning it was more raw, because we only had two-part harmonies. While, at first, it felt like a void, we pushed ourselves to put it all out there and be very honest. Now that Molly and I have been playing together for about 10 years, we’ve learned the nuances of each other’s musical abilities. We’ve taken on our own essence.”

The group is now gaining momentum with an increasing number of regional gigs. Underhill and Reed recently added bass player Salley Williamson to provide another layer of harmony.

Earlier this year the band released a self-titled album that was recorded with help from some of Asheville’s best players, including guitarist Aaron “Woody” Wood and members of Stephaniesid.

Filled with acoustic strings and pastoral melodies, the effort displays the group’s broad Americana flavors, as well as an attention to song craft that Underhill says takes influence from Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.

“I’ve been influenced by people that use imagery along with a paradoxical view of life,” she says. “There’s a sense when you know a lyric or song is working. It feels like you’re collaborating on some sort of collective conscious level with some of the great songwriters. It feels like you’re channeling something.”

The band plans to hit the road extensively next year, but they’re playing a local show this weekend at the Great Hall at the Grove Park Inn on Saturday afternoon. In addition to this show, they’ll be back at the resort again , Nov. 12 and Dec. 3.

“We’ll be playing there for the rest of the year,” Underhill adds. “Hopefully I can convince the band to whip up some holiday tunes.”

UNDERHILL ROSE TO BRING THEIR BLEND OF AMERICANA, BLUEGRASS, RHYTHM AND BLUES, AND ROOTS MUSIC TO AVONDALE ESTATES, RELEASES DEBUT CD - August 9, 2011

ASHEVILLE, NC - August 9, 2011 - Underhill Rose, featuring Atlanta native and Grady High School graduate, Molly Rose and her banjo-picking, country soul sister Eleanor Underhill return to Georgia to celebrate the release of their self-titled, debut CD. The ladies bring their impressive harmony of Americana, bluegrass, R&B, and roots music to Little Tree Studios (2834 Franklin Street) in Avondale Estates on Saturday, August 27th – show time is set for 8:00pm.

Molly Rose and Eleanor will be coming off of their appearance at Matt Stillwell’s Shinefest in North Carolina and they are excited to be heading south for Georgia. “It’s so wonderful to return home and release the new Underhill Rose CD,” said Molly. “We recorded a good portion of the album right there and it will be great to come back and celebrate.” Eleanor also looks forward to sharing the bands new CD. “We are so proud to finally have a product that authentically represents us,” she said.

The new album, Underhill Rose, was mixed by Atlanta’s Cayce Cole Means and features 11 original songs that display the impressive harmonies the band has become known for.  Molly Rose’s soaring vocals capture the listener’s attention in the country tinged tracks “Who Brought the Sun” and “2000 miles,” and her soul-baring musicality is showcased in the ballad, “Bridge.”  Underhill’s profound lyrics and musical styling encompass the album, featuring her sultry, heart-wrenching choruses in “Westside” and “Happy.” The latter features Aaron “Woody” Wood on electric guitar. Eleanor Underhill’s talents are also encapsulated in the amusing tune, “Sugar Mama,” and the self-defining song, “Better Off Alone”. Rose takes the lead in the Underhill penned “Learn,” a track reminiscent of the storytelling melodies of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The pair place special attention on their joint vocal strength in “No More Demons.” It is proven that they can write in a style similar to the Daltrey-Townsend partnership with the tracks “Thunderstorms” and “Lonely Tonight”.

The pairing began in 2002 when Eleanor and Molly Rose met at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. “We were students who loved to sing,” said Eleanor. “We would gather with some friends in a stairwell at school and practice harmonies, now we do it professionally and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” The magnificent sound that formed in that college stairwell has helped earn the band a strong regional following.

Harmony, however, is not the only bright spot with these “heartfelt country soul” singers. “Our music is completely original,” said Molly Rose. “But we take our influence from great soulful women like Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt, not mention duos like Simon & Garfunkel.” A prolific writer, Eleanor says, “It all comes down to a beautiful melody, good lyrics, and heartfelt singing to make a great band.”

Tickets for the Underhill Rose CD release event at Little Tree Studios are $7 and available at the door. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit “Community to Kenya”. Copies of the new album, Underhill Rose, will be available for purchase at the show or can be downloaded now on iTunes.

The Album is Out! - June 17, 2011

We are thrilled to release our self-titled debut album! Order today through our CD Baby widget. Physical copies include more pictures and all of the songs' lyrics.

Of course we called upon the help of lots of local talent: Listen for sounds from the likes of Aaron Woody Wood on slide and electric guitar, Chuck Lichtenburger on melodica, Melissa Hyman on cello, Amy Lovinger on violin, Ryan Burns on Hammond B-3, and J. Pearlman on electric and acoustic guitar. And yes, those are the sweet tinkling sounds of Heiniken bottles on Sugar Mama made by yours truly.

We couldn't have pulled it off without Jeff Knorr and Collapsable Studios, Andrew Schatzberg and Landslide Studio, Colt Bowen and Tree Sound Studios, and most of all Cayce Means and Little Tree Studios who managed to fit us in his demanding schedule.

Many thanks also to our dear friends and family who hold us up when times are tough. Thanks to The Means, The Grissetts, Brian Asplin, Ellie LaBar, Sandlin Gaither, and Studio B for being a big part of this process.

Thanks most of all to our loyal band comprised of Tim (Jobin) Haney on drums and Gary (Portugeek) Oliver on bass. You all work for the love of music and it inspires us and keeps this band afloat by golly!

Please purchase a CD, get some merchandise, spread the word, and come see a show! We want to be a part of your lives and entertain you! Enjoy! (All of these exclamation points is starting to make this look like a Dr. Bronner's bottle.)

As Molly writes on the inside of our CD case, "This project comes after a long wait, and was recorded during a supermoon and a tsunami, a locked senate, and a South full of tornadoes. Thank you for your patience and support."

I concur.

RECORDING ALBUM! - April 1, 2011

Yes, I know, we've been out-of-touch. We've just been so busy putting together our freshman Underhill Rose album. We're not sure whether a great title will come to us or we'll just go with self-titled. Most important now is getting the harmony vocals finished up and our guest musicians sitting in on some tunes. Well, I'll report back later. For now, I've got some tracking to do! xo

PS. I just turned 30!

with love,

Eleanor

Just finished 3 music videos! - November 16, 2010

We're fresh back from Jacksonville, FL. where we shot multiple music videos and played two sets at the Underbelly. We had the opportunity of putting music to lyrics about a woman struggling with infertility called "Invisible Loss." The process was pretty intense and we learned in the process that thousands of men and women wrestle with infertility and that there's not enough emotional or alternative medical support out there for them.

Since we were all dressed up in front of a camera, we decided to shoot a video for Underhill Rose's very own song, "Ecstasy," (which I hope I am finally spelling correctly). Most of the footage was shot in an abandoned house. But there are also some great shots of Molly looking beautiful walking by a creek while the sun was setting. I was in the background playing banjo so she could sing along! Then to add a little spunk to the evening, I had everyone grab someone else's instrument and sing lead to our recently recorded "Bare Little Rooms." It was a whirlwind of a weekend and we are glad to be back in Asheville. Can't wait to see the footage and put it together. Hopefully by the end of next month!
