Underhill Rose set to release new album “Something Real” May 31 - May 2, 2013

Album Release Celebration held at Asheville’s Isis Restaurant & Music Hall

SometingRealcoverSMALL.jpgASHEVILLE, NC – May 2, 2013 – Underhill Rose, the female trio known for impeccable harmonies and an ability to blend bluegrass, Americana, blues and soul into its trademarked “heartfelt country soul” sound, will launch its sophomore album, “Something Real,” Friday, May 31. An Album Release Celebration will be held at Isis Theater & Music Hall in Asheville, NC that night – show time is 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $10 at isisasheville.com or $12 at the door.

“Something Real” includes 13 tracks, with each member writing at least two songs, and features the familiar harmonies Underhill Rose has become known for, now filled out with a third female voice. Recorded in the famed Echo Mountain Recording Studio and with Black Lillies’ frontman Cruz Contreras’ serving as producer, the release features nine Asheville area musicians in addition to the ladies. The band recorded “Something Real” using money raised through a successful crowd-funding campaign, which generated donations from over 300 people. Following the 38-day push, the group had met 120 percent of the $15,000 goal.

“This album is everything we hoped it would be and more,” said Eleanor Underhill. “We had a phenomenal producer and recording team, in a beautiful studio which allowed us to make an album that truly represents us. I can’t say enough about the team, guest musicians and the product that came out of that magical time.”

Prolific is the only word that sums up the music on “Something Real.” Harmonies lay the groundwork for the sound of the new record, but the group makes a concerted effort to feature a single lead vocalist on nearly every track, with one exception. All three women contributed to the upbeat, campy tune “Never Gonna Work Out.” The track has been a staple in the trinity’s stage show over the past year and is the lone album track in which the band members are the only musicians. Underhill and Rose trade-off lead vocals, and Williamson fronts a verse for the first time, singing to a man who lost his chance with her.

“We really tried to showcase all of our talents with this one,” said Molly Rose. “From the writing to the vocals, our instrumentality to, in Salley’s case, tap-dancing, we wanted this album to be a true reflection of our band and the music we make. The result was better than I had ever dreamed and the credit goes to the fans. Without them, we could have never done this.”

Underhill’s writing prowess is the sole power behind seven of the songs, with five featuring her smoky, sultry vocals. As she demonstrated in the band’s debut album, her music is a time capsule of her life. From love found, in the bluesy ballad “Sublime Charm” and the swamp-country rocker “I Wanna Love You,” to love lost, in the country tinged “Unused to You,” it’s evident that the pointed lyrics are meant for someone in particular. “Helpless Wanderer” and “Bare Little Rooms” are two rather upbeat bluegrass-based tunes that really speak to her uncertainty, while serving as two of the best examples of the group’s harmonizing power.

Rose takes center stage as lead vocalist for the bulk of the collaboration, and her sound has never been more Americana than it is on the title track, “Something Real.” As in previous partnerships, Underhill wrote this song with Rose’s voice in mind, and that search for “something real” might just be the music that results from these two ladies’ partnership. “White Rose” follows the same formula, and is reminiscent of the country rock another Carolina band, The Marshall Tucker Band, patented.

An autobiographical tune, “Little House” is Rose’s first writing credit on the release, and she summons the soaring strength of her voice and pairs it with a foot tappin’ chorus. The song is also the most prominent example of Williamson’s third harmony. The definition of country soul cries through in the storytelling ballad “Drives Me To Drinking.” The choruses close like a 1960s Motown hit, and joining the harmonies with an organ, you can easily pickup on the influence church singing had on Rose. The most pleasantly surprising track Rose brings to the mix is the ragtime-esque “The End of 27,” which looks toward the brighter side of being 28. Fittingly, it closes out the album and leaves the listener on a high note.

Underhill Rose fans will find two songs, both sung by Molly Rose, written by Salley Williamson. The bass player and newest addition to the lineup wrote “Let Her Go,” a brooding poem that shows her mastery of the songwriting craft. Well placed harmonies and a strong performance from Rose bring the story to life. Finally, Williamson pays homage to the Lowcountry of South Carolina, specifically her hometown of Denmark, in “They Got My Back.” It’s quintessential country and perfectly captures the ladies having fun in the studio. That feeling of joy and positivity is the mantra for the entire album, the fans made sure of that.

“This record is a group effort in the truest sense,” said Salley Williamson. “Not only is it the first time I recorded with the band, and ever for that matter, but it was the fans that gave us the capital to make this a reality. We were overwhelmed by the support we have received from everyone – fans, friends and family. This whole process seems so surreal and we kept everyone with us in spirit while we created this new album.”

Underhill Rose launches its tour in support of “Something Real” May 31, with concerts planned throughout the Southeast and the west. For more information, please visit underhillrose.com or follow the band on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and ReverbNation.

About Underhill Rose

Underhill Rose blends aspects of Americana, rhythm and blues, country and bluegrass into one harmony-laden melody. The trio’s original songs are wrapped in three-part harmonies and packaged with an eye-catching stage presence. The smoky voice of Eleanor Underhill joined with the soaring vocals of Molly Rose and the country twang of Salley Williamson creates a sound that is self-described as “heartfelt country soul.” Playing banjo and harmonica, guitar and upright bass, respectively, the group has carved out a place in the Americana scene with songs that run the gamut from heart-wrenching to sassy and playful to thought-provoking.

Since forming in 2009, Underhill Rose has played throughout the Southeast, including appearances at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion and the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. The ladies have shared the stage with the likes of singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Kevn Kinney of Drivin' N Cryin', Blackberry Smoke, Col. Bruce Hampton, Larry Keel and the Everyone Orchestra featuring Jon Fishman and Papa Mali, and have been praised by industry legends, fans and media outlets throughout the country.

"Spring Break" Tour - March 22, 2013

It's been a long cold winter, but spring is here! It may have been long and cold, but the winter gave us time to finish the new album. We're moving toward the mastering stage and have decided to hit the road for a little change of scenery.

This should be a great trek. We start off tonight with a show in Asheville at Jack of the Wood, then we head to Knoxville to perform at Boyd's Jig and Reel. Two great venues in two wonderful towns! Then, you can look for us in Roanoke, Washington, D.C., Frederick and Annapolis. Call this our "Spring Break" tour.

We hope you have a chance to join us over the next week. It will give you a small preview of the new album and the chance to reminisce with familiar tracks from the Underhill Rose songbook. We've had a great start to 2013 and it keeps getting better.

We are in the studio this week. It's an exciting time and will mark Salley's first recording with Underhill Rose. We have been going through a number of pre-production meetings with Cruz Contreras, our producer and a member of The Black Lillies. Cruz has brought more to this project than we ever thought possible.

We cannot wait to share this new music with you and we look forward to seeing you on the road. Speaking of which, we have a few shows to announce. We're hitting the road and playing a few familiar places and pushing north to play around Washington, D.C. and in Maryland. Americana trio to play songs from upcoming release Wednesday, Jan. 9

ASHEVILLE, NC – Dec. 29, 2012 – Underhill Rose, Strada Italiano and Sazerac of Asheville are joining forces to support the funding of the next Underhill Rose album. On Wednesday, Jan. 9, Underhill Rose members Eleanor Underhill, Molly Rose and Salley Williamson will be performing songs slated for their upcoming album and meeting with fans at the famed Asheville eateries (27 & 29 Broadway Street) beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event offers a rare opportunity to hear the music that will make up the second Underhill Rose release, and provide supporters and potential donors with a chance to get to know the band.

“This is a great opportunity for us to share the songs from the new album and raise money for the recording process,” said Molly Rose, singer and guitarist. “We want this release to be the BEST Underhill Rose album and we cannot do that without the support of great friends and fans. Having the chance to see everyone in person is a great way to get to know our supporters and hopefully encourage more people to help us meet our goal. Not only do we hope to see our Asheville fans, but hopefully folks from throughout the region, including Tennesseans, Virginians and South Carolinians.”

The event is open to the public; with live music to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Strada Italiano. “Our (Strada & Sazerac) support of Underhill Rose is greatly for the benefit of us all and music history,” said Anthony Cerrato, owner of Strada Italiano and Sazerac. “These ladies’ dreams, with all of our help, will one day inspire the creative spirit through the magic of their music in all of us. Give now to help their dream manifest so they can give 1,000 times back to us all in the future.”

Eleanor Underhill, banjo picker and vocalist, is grateful for the support. “The people at Strada and Sazerac have been incredibly supportive of our career over the years. Not only are they providing us with a venue to perform and raise awareness about the new album, but 15 percent of every bill that night will go to our campaign. So, plan to come out, get a great meal at Strada and enjoy a nightcap with Underhill Rose at Sazerac.”

The band has set a donation goal of $15,000 through the crowd funding website Kickstarter. “We will only reach this target if our fans donate and encourage their friends and family to do the same,” said Salley Williamson, upright bass player. “And keep in mind, the $15,000 goal must be met by the cut off at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. If we don’t raise that much money, Underhill Rose will not receive any of the donations and the money remains with the people who pledged. We need our fans now, more than ever.”

Americana trio to appear on UNC-TV’s NC Now Friday, Dec. 14

ASHEVILLE, NC – Dec. 13, 2012 – Underhill Rose is asking fans to help them fund the making of a new album through crowd funding website Kickstarter. Donations can be made in exchange for rewards that include pre-release downloads, house concerts and voice or banjo lessons from one of the members. The campaign will conclude Saturday, Jan. 12 at 11:59 p.m., with the album being completed the following May.

“Our fans want a new Underhill Rose album and we want to make one,” said banjo picker and vocalist Eleanor Underhill. “But, we don’t want to make just any album; we want this to be the best Underhill Rose release! Through our fans’ donations, we will be able to record in a great space with a wonderful team.” The band has chosen Echo Mountain Recording Studio in Asheville, NC as the site to produce the new album.

The band has set a funding goal of $15,000. “Reaching this target will only happen if our fans donate and share our campaign with their own networks. The more they share, the more people have a chance to help us out,” said co-founder Molly Rose, singer and guitarist. “And keep in mind, the $15,000 goal must be met by the cut off at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. Underhill Rose Stripes

Hey Everyone!

We want you to help us create our next album. We three ladies have been traveling far outside of our Asheville, NC home, touring the Southeast over the past year, meeting great people, and writing new songs that we are so excited to share with you!

Eleanor Underhill and Molly Rose Reed collaborated in 2011 to bring you Underhill Rose’s first release. But this new album will be different. Salley Williamson will be adding the third harmony for the first time on a recording, bringing her upright bass and writing skills to the mix.

Our travels and experiences have inspired a crop of new songs that we would love to record, many of which we have already been road-testing at our live shows. As some of you know, Eleanor has won songwriting contests while Molly's "Who Brought the Sun" is featured on City of Asheville’s tourism commercial. We feel that the new songs are fresh, inspired, and real, and we can't wait to get them recorded.

YOU HAVE ASKED WHEN OUR NEXT ALBUM WILL BE RELEASED - Well, the time is now!

If you're ready for a new album then we're ready to make it. We are planning to record in an amazingly-equipped studio called Echo Mountain in Asheville, NC with an exciting team of folks to help produce, engineer, and mix the album. Through your donations, not only will we be able to record in a great space with a wonderful team, but we can also get this music to even more fans across the country and around the world!

All of these great additions to the recording and marketing process do take funding. As they say, behind every great act is a great amount of...well, money ;). This is where you come in. And, we don't expect you to walk away empty handed. Check out the donation tiers that we have proposed. The more you donate, the more you get. Do you want a copy of the album? What about some original artwork by all three ladies? Or, say, a show played at your house? Perhaps you want all of that, and your name as Executive Producer on our album. Great! Let's get started...

As an added bonus, we will be releasing a new web video series called "Underhill Rose Under Cover" featuring some of our favorite cover songs. As we reach certain levels of funding, we will release a new cover song for anyone that has backed our project. This is your chance to hear our take on some great songs (there will be some surprises) that will put a smile on your face.

It has been a great year for us, and we thank you for your kind responses about our music and the support you've shown us thus far. When we decided that it was time to make the next album, we also decided to ask for your support. This is a step that will help ensure this album will be the best we have ever made. Truly, we can't make this next album a GREAT one without you! Please donate and share this with your friends to help us continue to make the "heartfelt country soul" music you have come to love.

And, since it is the holiday season, your donation could bring a great gift to someone special.

Happy Holidays!

UNDERHILL ROSE SET TO PLAY BORDER BASH IN DOWNTOWN BRISTOL - July 16, 2012

Harmonizing trio takes part in the State Street concert series on Friday, July 20th

ASHEVILLE, NC, July 5, 2012:  With a great start to their 2012 summer tour, Underhill Rose is bringing their trademarked blend of Americana, bluegrass, country, soul, R&B, and roots music to Border Bash in Bristol. The all-female trio is set to take the stage on State Street (600 block) on Friday, July 20th at 7:00 p.m. The free event will also feature music from the Charleston, South Carolina-based duo Megan Jean & the KFB.

“We’re coming back to the Tri-Cities and we can’t wait,” said guitarist and vocalist Molly Rose. “We have built a great following in the area and playing Border Bash is such an honor.” The trio picked the area to start off their 2012 tour and their summer stretch in June, and Eleanor Underhill, the group’s banjo picker and singer, is excited to be back. ”Our last show in the area showed us how great our Tennessee fans really are,” she said. “The Tri-Cities are like our second home and I can’t wait to take the stage in Bristol and share our love of mountain music.”

Being called “one of the most promising rootsy women artists in the Americana scene” by No Depression magazine, Underhill Rose has earned a reputation as a trio with an impeccable sound and a captivating stage presence. Upon hearing the band for the first time, the Asheville Citizen-Times described the sound as “dusty country soul with gorgeous vocal arrangements...filled with acoustic strings and pastoral melodies.”

Underhill Rose is the creation of Eleanor Underhill and Molly Rose, who continued their musical journey following the breakup of the famed Barrel House Mamas. With a unique ability to blend Americana, country, roots, R&B, soul, and bluegrass music in soothing harmonies, the band has gained dedicated following throughout the Southeast. After the release of their debut self-titled album, a WNCW “2011 Regional Release” that has been added to Pandora, the duo became a trio with the addition of upright bass player and backing vocalist Salley Williamson. Williamson joined the group in time for its first music video of the popular “Who Brought the Sun,” which was recently nominated for a Music Video Asheville award.

The ladies have become the darlings of Southeastern music, recently being handpicked to play at the celebration announcing the building of the New Belgium brewery in Asheville. Underhill Rose regularly appears at the famed Grove Park Inn and has just launched an extensive summer tour, that includes appearances at Border Bash and the Rhythm and Roots Reunion in Bristol, Tennessee; the Steppin’ Out Festival in Blacksburg, Virginia; and the European Street Café in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to touring, the group is currently writing new songs to be released in the coming year and making plans for a new music video.
